The daughter of a woman who tragically passed away on a tropical island following a cruise ship’s departure without her has expressed her deep sorrow.
Suzanne Rees, 80, was found deceased on Lizard Island after disembarking from the Coral Adventurer during a 60-day luxury cruise. Despite being a solo traveler, the ship set off to its next destination without Ms. Rees. Several hours later, she was discovered lifeless in a secluded area.
Reports indicate that Ms. Rees sustained severe injuries after falling during a hike on the island. An investigation is ongoing to determine the circumstances surrounding her failure to reboard the ship, including allegations of a missing passenger count before departure.
Katherine Rees, the daughter of the deceased, has criticized Coral Expeditions for what she perceives as negligence. She emphasized the need for a thorough inquiry to uncover potential lapses that could have prevented her mother’s untimely death.
A search helicopter located Ms. Rees’ body the following day near a hiking trail on the island. Authorities believe she may have fallen from a cliff or slope.
The authorities have confirmed that a coroner will investigate the incident as a “non-suspicious death.” Coral Expeditions’ CEO, Mark Fifield, stated that the company is fully cooperating with the investigations and refrained from commenting further at this time.
The cruise company expressed condolences to the Rees family and pledged ongoing support during this difficult period. Investigations by the Australian Maritime Safety Authority and workplace safety regulators are underway to determine why Ms. Rees was not properly monitored during boarding at Lizard Island.
