A woman in Australia, originally from Chile, had a terrifying encounter with a magpie that left her with severe injuries. Marcela Montalva, who had recently moved to the remote town of Ravenswood, was attacked by the bird while riding her bike to a local post office on her day off.
The vicious attack caused Montalva to lose control of her bicycle, leading to a hard fall that left her unconscious. She was later airlifted to Townsville University Hospital due to the remote location of the incident. At the hospital, it was discovered that the magpie had inflicted serious injuries, including multiple fractures to her left cheekbone and a rare fracture of the hyoid bone in her neck.
Montalva, who expressed gratitude for being alive, now requires urgent facial reconstructive surgery to address her difficulties with eating and speaking. Despite facing challenges with her travel insurance coverage, she has managed to raise approximately $12,000 (AUD) through a fundraising campaign to cover the necessary medical expenses.
Reflecting on the unexpected turn of events, Montalva stated that she never anticipated such a severe incident from a bird attack. She emphasized the importance of safety and highlighted the unforeseeable nature of the accident.
