A recent survey of 2,000 professionals who travel for business revealed that 26% actively seek out entertainment and content creation opportunities during their work trips. Specifically, members of Generation Z view these trips as a chance to elevate their lifestyle by opting for upscale accommodations and indulging in higher-priced meals. Notably, 36% of Gen Z individuals increase their social media activity while on these trips, sharing an average of three photos per day with their online followers to showcase their work-related luxuries.
Interestingly, while around one-third of Gen Zers expense their meals, a significant majority of them, nearly 75%, choose to pay for upgrades out of their own pockets, a behavior less common among their older counterparts, where only 27% do the same.
The research, conducted by Hotels.com, coincides with the launch of a new program called ‘Save Your Way,’ which allows members to decide between immediate savings through their member discount or accumulating rewards for future use.
Melanie Fish, a spokesperson for Hotels.com, noted that the younger generation is embracing the idea of blending work and leisure during business trips. Gen Z and Millennials are not only more likely to extend their trips for personal enjoyment but are also adept at maximizing rewards earned from work travel for their personal vacations. The study also revealed that 97% of young professionals have developed strategies to make their business travel experiences more enjoyable.
Additionally, the study found that young British workers often extend their business trips by adding personal days to make the most of their travels, or save their daily food allowance to splurge on a high-end dining experience. Furthermore, over 33% of young employees prefer using taxis or private cars over public transport while on business trips.
Interestingly, a significant number of respondents expressed a desire to bring along a friend or family member on their business travels to share in the excitement of discovering new places and experiences. Notably, respondents across all age groups agreed that New York is the ultimate dream destination for a business trip, according to data from OnePoll.com.
Melanie emphasized that for Generation Z, business trips represent not just career advancement opportunities but also chances to network and explore new locations. She highlighted the importance of accommodating the diverse preferences of different age groups by offering flexibility in how they utilize their member discounts.
