“Grandmother Tragically Left Behind on Cruise Ship”

A tragic incident unfolded as an 80-year-old grandmother, Suzanne Rees, was discovered deceased on a secluded island after being inadvertently left behind by a cruise ship during her vacation. The distressing situation came to light when she failed to appear for dinner, about five hours after she went missing on Lizard Island in Queensland, Australia.

The elderly tourist had participated in a guided hike on the island but fell ill during the excursion. Regrettably, while she was unwell and alone, the cruise ship departed for its subsequent destination, marking the start of Coral Adventurer’s extensive journey around Australia, a luxurious holiday priced at £40,000 per individual.

Family members of Ms. Rees criticized Coral Expeditions, operated by the National Roads and Motorists’ Association (NRMA) in Australia, for what they described as a lack of care and judgment in the handling of the situation. An official inquiry involving multiple agencies has been initiated to investigate the circumstances surrounding the abandonment of the Australian native, who was known for her passion for bushwalking and gardening.

Numerous questions remain unanswered concerning the sequence of events leading to her demise, particularly the delay in the crew noticing her absence. Katherine Rees, speaking about her mother’s tragic passing, revealed that Suzanne had become unwell during a scheduled hike on Lizard Island, but specifics about her condition are undisclosed.

Ms. Rees’s lifeless body was located 50 meters off the hiking path to Cook’s Look, the highest peak on Lizard Island, just days after the Coral Adventurer departed from Cairns. Lizard Island, a popular destination for divers, snorkelers, and hikers, is renowned for its seclusion and natural beauty.

Cook’s Look, named after Captain James Cook, the renowned British explorer, who purportedly ascended the mountain in 1770 after his ship, the Endeavour, encountered a reef, offers a challenging but rewarding four-kilometer hike that demands moderate to high fitness levels.

Following her illness, Suzanne was reportedly instructed to descend the mountain without assistance. The ship departed without conducting a passenger count, and shortly thereafter, or during that timeframe, Ms. Rees passed away in solitude, as per Katherine’s account.

Expressing shock and sorrow, the family condemned the alleged abandonment of their grandmother due to what they deemed a failure in care and judgment. The incident where Ms. Rees was reported missing only after she missed dinner has raised concerns about passenger safety and accountability.

Traci Ayris, a sailor onboard SV Vellamo near Lizard Island, overheard emergency radio transmissions from the Coral Expeditions vessel, highlighting the absence of passenger headcounts on the island. Coral Expeditions CEO, Mark Fifield, extended condolences to the Rees family and pledged cooperation with ongoing investigations to ascertain the facts surrounding the tragic incident.
