Sky Q has long been a favorite TV device in the UK, known for its ability to store content on its built-in hard drive. Now, a new contender has entered the ring. Manhattan’s latest offering, the S4-R Freesat 4K TV Recorder, is designed similarly to Sky Q, utilizing a dish to deliver shows and movies, along with internal storage for recordings. Users will enjoy features like a full interactive TV guide and the ability to pause live TV.
What sets the Manhattan S4-R apart is its lack of subscription fees after purchase, providing access to over 100 free TV and radio channels. While premium content like Sky Sports and Sky Cinema is not available, this option appeals to those seeking entertainment without additional costs.
Similar to Sky Q, the S4-R can record multiple channels simultaneously and comes with a 500GB hard drive, offering space for around 300 hours of content. Larger 1TB and 2TB versions are on the horizon for those needing more storage. The device matches Sky’s live TV controls, allowing users to pause and rewind broadcasts.
Manhattan promises a user-friendly interface for the S4-R, featuring search functionality and access to over 60,000 hours of on-demand content through various apps like BBC iPlayer, ITVX, Channel 4, and My5.
According to Manhattan’s COO, Alex Arbab-Zadeh, the S4-R expands on the success of their Freeview recorder by providing a straightforward, subscription-free experience for Freesat users. The device enhances recording capabilities, enabling up to four simultaneous recordings, double the previous limit.
Positioned as a compelling alternative to subscription TV, the S4-R offers flexibility, choice, and a way to avoid high monthly bills. The Manhattan S4-R will hit the market this month, available at retailers including Currys, John Lewis, Argos, and Richer Sounds. Prices start at £219.99 for the 500GB model, with the 1TB version launching in May at £249.99, and the 2TB model following in June at £279.99.
