The Met Office has provided an update on a weather phenomenon called “anticyclonic gloom” and disclosed its anticipated conclusion date.
According to forecasters, there is a possibility of sunlight piercing through the cloudy skies in certain parts of the UK on Saturday after a week dominated by dull weather conditions caused by the presence of an anticyclone or high-pressure system settled over the region. This atmospheric pattern has led to the persistent grey weather this week.
“Anticyclonic gloom” occurs when air descends towards the surface under high pressure, creating a layer of moisture or low cloud close to the ground that obstructs the October sun from breaking through. Although Friday is expected to remain overcast with occasional light rain in some areas, Saturday could bring a brighter outlook as the high-pressure system gradually moves towards the North Sea.
Meteorologist Ellie Glaisyer from the Met Office mentioned, “We anticipate seeing the most sunshine, as observed, mainly in eastern regions. The exact locations for the sunniest periods are uncertain, but there might be a noticeable improvement compared to recent days.”
While she cautioned that many areas could still experience cloudy conditions, Glaisyer noted that Saturday might offer more breaks in the cloud cover compared to recent weather patterns. Sunday is likely to start damp with widespread rainfall and increased wind speeds.
Looking ahead, Glaisyer stated, “After the weather front clears on Sunday, we can expect a variable weather pattern in the upcoming week, featuring sunny intervals, heavy showers, and the possibility of prolonged rainy periods.”
Despite the potential for brighter intervals, a full day of uninterrupted sunshine seems unlikely in the immediate future, as per the Met Office’s forecast for the weekend ahead. Following brief periods of sunshine, wet and windy weather is predicted to move in from the west.
The extended weather outlook from October 21 to October 30 suggests continued unsettled conditions, with frequent showers and occasional strong winds. Temperatures are projected to remain near average, with some potential for a shift to a cooler, more showery weather pattern later in the period as high pressure establishes over the Atlantic and low pressure systems form to the east of the UK.
