A 19-year-old is facing the alarming prospect of losing her eyesight due to a rare parasite entering her eye while she was showering with contact lenses. Grace Jamison, who recently recounted her ordeal on social media, was diagnosed with acanthamoeba keratitis in August. This condition is triggered by tiny amoebas that lodge themselves in the cornea and are commonly found in water sources like lakes, wells, shower water, as well as in dust and dirt.
While anyone can contract this infection, individuals who wear contact lenses are at higher risk if they neglect proper hygiene practices. Grace shared in a TikTok video that during her stay in the Dominican Republic, she showered with her contacts in, exposing herself to the contaminated water in the region.
Describing the treatment as intensive and painful, Grace mentioned that she now needs to apply medicated eye drops every thirty minutes to an hour, some of which contain pool disinfectant and other chemicals to eliminate the parasite. The treatment process is anticipated to span from six months to a year, with additional therapy required to address the existing scarring and damage caused by the parasite.
Highlighting the severity of acanthamoeba symptoms, Grace emphasized the excruciating eye and head pain, potential blindness, and vision cloudiness associated with the infection. Despite the hardships, she is leveraging her experience to raise awareness about contact lens safety and advised others to adhere to simple precautions such as washing hands before handling contacts, regularly changing solution, avoiding sleeping, swimming, or showering with lenses.
Grace’s objective in sharing her story is to underscore how easily one’s vision can be compromised. She underscored the importance of appreciating the gift of sight and not taking it for granted.
