A standout title on the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1986, ‘Castlevania’ captivated players with its monster-fighting action, challenging gameplay, and catchy soundtrack. Despite a rich history of sequels and spinoffs, the series lay dormant for years, with the last new installment released in 2014.
‘Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse’ now emerges to engage both new and longtime fans by drawing inspiration from the diverse chapters of the series’ past and the indie games it has influenced. This latest entry offers a nostalgic blend of classic 2D exploration and stunning visuals, though its high level of difficulty may present a barrier to newcomers.
In this game, players assume the role of Rose Belmont, a monster hunter and the daughter of Trevor Belmont and Sypha Belnades from ‘Castlevania 3: Dracula’s Curse.’ Set in 1499 Paris, the story unfolds as Rose investigates a monster invasion while grappling with a mysterious curse inherited from her mother.
The gameplay of ‘Belmont’s Curse’ mirrors the beloved 1997 title ‘Symphony of the Night,’ featuring a Metroidvania-style world where players navigate interconnected locations, uncovering new abilities to access previously inaccessible areas. Rose’s arsenal includes a versatile whip and various weapons to combat foes and overcome environmental obstacles.
While the game’s combat and movement mechanics deliver an immersive experience, the heightened difficulty level poses a significant challenge. Players must master precise timing and strategic planning to navigate treacherous trap rooms and defeat formidable enemies. Backtracking through the game world can be time-consuming, as safe havens for saving progress are scarce.
Despite its gameplay frustrations, ‘Belmont’s Curse’ shines in its exceptional art direction and soundtrack. The vibrant visuals bring Paris and Dracula’s castle to life with captivating detail, while the soundtrack blends classical elements with modern twists, enhancing the immersive experience.
However, the Nintendo Switch version of the game faced performance issues during the review period, including visual degradation, longer loading times, and input lag. Players may find a smoother experience on other platforms like the Xbox Series X. Konami has promised an update to address these issues across all platforms, but it was not available at the time of this review.
