Igor Shesterkin of the New York Rangers made NHL history by scoring a goal in a 5-1 win against Tampa Bay in New York City. Shesterkin, the 18th goaltender to achieve this milestone, shot the puck into an empty net with 2:34 remaining. His teammates mobbed him in celebration, and fans at Madison Square Garden chanted “Igor! Igor!” in support.
This goal marked Shesterkin’s first career goal and the 21st by a goalie, including playoffs. He is now the sole Rangers goalie to have accomplished this feat. Lightning coach Jon Cooper gave Shesterkin the opportunity by pulling Andrei Vasilevskiy for an extra attacker during the game.
In addition to his scoring prowess, Shesterkin displayed stellar performance in goal, stopping 24 of 25 shots faced. He was rightfully named the first star of the game for his impressive dual contribution to the Rangers’ victory.
