A young girl, who was vacationing with her family, is currently in critical condition at a hospital after allegedly being left unattended in a hotel pool in Rhodes.
Authorities stated that the child was discovered around noon at a hotel in Lardos, Rhodes. Surveillance footage reportedly showed the toddler entering the pool alone, and shortly after, a bystander noticed her in the water.
A woman, believed to be a British doctor, leaped into action to rescue the three-year-old, performed CPR, and emergency services were contacted. Medical professionals worked to stabilize the child before transferring her to Rhodes Hospital in a serious condition.
Subsequently, she was airlifted to the University Hospital in Heraklion, Crete, where she underwent surgery to alleviate pressure on her brain. She is currently receiving care in the intensive care unit.
Authorities in Rhodes disclosed that the girl’s uncle, who was responsible for supervising her, and the travel agency manager overseeing hotel guests, were apprehended a couple of hours later. They have been formally charged after appearing in court.
Rhodes Hospital Director, Michalis Sokorelos, mentioned that the girl had been in the water for an extended period and showed no signs of responsiveness upon arrival at the hospital.
The UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office is providing assistance to the family of the child and is coordinating with Greek officials.
