Balancing screen time and quality family interactions can be a challenging task for many households on a daily basis. The increasing use of digital devices by children for educational purposes, social connections, gaming, and entertainment blurs the boundaries of what constitutes a reasonable amount of screen time.
In an effort to promote open and honest discussions within families regarding online safety, The Family Chat campaign, in collaboration with Tesco Mobile, is set to run throughout 2026. Renowned author and podcaster, Giovanna Fletcher, engages with parents and children to address the challenges they encounter, how they are managing them, and how Tesco Mobile’s online safety tools can be beneficial.
Included in these resources is a downloadable family pledge, enabling families to establish simple commitments regarding healthy screen time practices and ensuring children’s safety online. Giovanna Fletcher mentions that while she and her husband are currently handling the situation well, they understand the importance of regularly reassessing their approach.
For the Karley family, comprising Anna, Emmanuel, and their three children, phones play a crucial role in staying connected, managing school obligations, and navigating their busy schedules. To facilitate conversations about screen time in an engaging manner, the Karleys participated in the Team Mum v Team Dad Online Safety Challenge. Divided into two teams, they completed tasks without using their phones, such as ranking screen-related activities against offline pursuits like cooking and reading.
Upon completing the challenges, the family committed to implementing their newfound knowledge by filling out Tesco Mobile’s family pledge, outlining agreements on screen time, privacy, and sharing. Seeking to strike a balance between digital engagement and real-world interactions, Anna and Emmanuel plan to leverage the expert guidance and resources available on Tesco Mobile’s Online Safety Hub. They have initiated a phones-down rule at 9:30 pm to allocate more quality family time, engaging in activities like group quizzes.
In addition to these efforts, it is essential to remain vigilant when consuming online content. Warning signs to watch out for include sensationalized headlines, suspicious spelling errors, isolated sources of information, and content aiming to evoke negative emotions. Encouraging children to verify social media accounts, fact-checking together, and promoting critical thinking skills are valuable practices in navigating the digital landscape.
